I'm sure they could, but I'm sure such a regulation would be easily "skirted" -- after all, it's just a label that anyone can sew on, correct?

In the end, we really just need to think a bit when we buy stuff.

Nez - these are great points. I really hate to think I could unwittingly buy a product which has been made in a sweatshop in another country. I think manufacturers should be forced by law to carry a label which states that this is the case.

Hi Clay,

I've been on the receiving end of those comments myself. For me, there are some things I wouldn't take even if you GAVE them to me.

Pay me, though, that might be a little different. :-)

"But these plastic house slippers are only 28 cents! It would almost be wrong NOT to buy them." :-) (The funny thing is that I've actually heard people say things like this).

@Barbara: Our culture definitely fosters the buy, buy, buy mentality -- the reasons are probably many. Hmm...sounds like a good idea for a post.

@JEMi: Need vs Want is definitely one of the hardest battles one can choose to engage in -- I think a lot of people don't. I know I get caught up in "wants" once in a while. But being self-employed, I definitely try to watch out on a lot of expenses.

@Hunter: "You get what you pay for" is still 80% true in my book.

Some people think you get what you pay for, and others think that whatever's cheapest is the best deal. But in reality, it's much more complicated than any simple rule. You sure fleshed out a lot of the details here!

Yeah... It's not that I like spouting money. I really don't. But nothing irks me like going out to buy something I need.. or want.. and it dysfunctioning because I shaved too much cost and got something that reflects that. Especially as a college student, it's important for me to shop smart and buy to last.

About service - this post reminds me of how I moved here and bc I'm on my own, I needed help setting up some of the furniture especially in the higher areas of my home. In trying to "save money", I spent just as much if not more for this "handy man" to set these things up. And he made a lot of mistakes.

"sir, please make sure it's on this wall."
we discuss it at length. Great
come back up stairs.. It's on the opposite wall.

What?

and wait - did you scratch my wood?!

"Oh.. uh .. I couldn't help it"

....

Pay attention with where you spend you dollar and for what. Some things can afford cutting costs. Others.. not so much

This was a useful post Nez .. I think of some parts of what makes things cost what it does.. but this is insightful. Now I know more. :)

Hi Nez,

Why is that? Why do people just buy, buy, buy? Is it that mentality "he who dies with the most toys wins"?

I have become more conscientious about what I buy. I also try to buy products made in the USA. I think this helps to support our economy, plus our regulations are tougher.

With the amount of recalls on toys, dog food, etc from China, for me it reinforces the fact that we need to keep more of our dollars "at home" even though the price may be a little higher.
